Day 37

Curiosity led me to meet Aidan Gomez, co-founder and CEO of Cohere.

Two weeks ago, I was curious about a paper that helped change modern Artificial intelligence: Attention Is All You Need.

Yesterday, that curiosity brought me to the Cohere × University of Toronto AMA, where I had the opportunity to learn directly from Aidan Gomez, one of the paper’s eight authors and hear him speak about his journey, building Cohere, and AI sovereignty.

Here are a few notes I learned from him.

1. He shared his journey while he was a University of Toronto student, he was studying deep learning and repeatedly encountered Google Brain researchers in papers. Instead of just reading their work, he cold emailed them. he reached out to the researchers after reading their work, shared an idea, and that led to an opportunity.

2. How do he keep up with Tech? He said I go through waves. You don't have to understand everything at once. Sometimes, you go deep on one question and let curiosity lead you to the next.

3. He also spoke about the importance of having empathy, being ambitious, being a champion and irrational confidence.

My mind immediately decided to put his advice into practice. After the session, I walked up to him and said:

Hi, my name is Krina. I’m just a curious mind. One day soon I will work with you at Cohere. See you at the top. 🤝

Yes, I did that.

I strongly believe that you become who you surround yourself with.
